Auto body parts can be bought new or used through online websites and
physical auto shops around the world. While new parts are always in
prime condition their prices can be a bit steep so people often lean
towards discounted used auto parts to shave considerable amounts of
money off the cost of their repairs. While the savings can be phenomenal
up front, there are some drawbacks to using second hand auto body parts
as well.
History
Depending on what you are looking for, you
may not be able to get a full history of the part or the vehicle it
came from which is always risky. We've all heard of cars being lemons
and we have heard the horror stories from people who have fallen victim
and bought one of those cars just to have it break down shortly
thereafter. You might not realize it, but the same thing can happen with
a used part for your vehicle. While the part might look like it's in
good condition, your rarely have any guarantee that it will last when
you buy it used.
Finding the Right Fit
Another risk to
buying used auto body parts is the fact that you might end up with
something that doesn't properly fit your vehicle. When buying online you
may not be provided with accurate information or with enough
information to be sure that the part is going to fit your vehicle. You
can often avoid buying the wrong part in store or online by double
checking the information on the part you are replacing or by contacting
the dealer to confirm what types of auto parts are compatible with your
vehicle.
Warranties
The biggest problem with second hand
auto body parts is that they rarely include a warranty, and if they do
it dulls in comparison to the full replacement guarantees that usually
come with brand new parts. The quality of a used part is never
guaranteed since the full history of the part is unknown. Although you
might get a used part for half the price of a new one, you may find
yourself having to replace it much sooner than expected or it could
cause additional vehicle damage if it doesn't operate properly.
Most
of the issues with used auto parts can easily be avoided by purchasing
new parts if you can afford it. Otherwise, do what you can to have the
used parts checked out by your personal mechanic or a reputable auto
shop to make sure that they are in good condition and won't harm your
vehicle. Try to seek out places that sell second hand parts but still
offer warranties and read the guarantees thoroughly to make sure the
warranty is of good quality. While buying used can save you money in the
short term, it can cost you more in the long term if you don't do your
homework before buying used auto body parts.

ReplyDeleteThere are many used engine stores out there from where you can get your preferred engine, but make sure that the place is reputed and provides quality products with service. You can also take a look at http://www.automotix.net/usedengines/ as I had bought a used engine for the Silvia from them. It came with a 3 year warranty and free shipping.
